Bendigo
Art Gallery
Bendigo
Art Gallery was established in 1887. The original Victorian
building was formerly the Bendigo Rifleman's Orderly Room.
It is now used to display the collection of Australian art from the
1850s - 1900s. In 1897 and 1905 two additional period rooms in the
Victorian and Edwardian style were added to the building.
Today these rooms display the Gallery's outstanding
collection of 19th century British and European paintings and decorative
arts.
Commencing in 1996 the Gallery underwent an extensive building
and renovation program.
This resulted
in six new Gallery spaces, including a sculpture annexe,
and new rooms for the display of temporary exhibitions and the permanent
collection of 20th century Australian art.
Bendigo
Art Gallery has an extensive and varied collection of paintings,
furniture, works on paper, sculpture and decorative arts.
The strengths of the collection include European
art of the 19th century and Australian art from the I 800s onwards.
The 19th
century collection includes examples from the Romantic period,
the Barbizon School and French Impressionism.
Narrative paintings feature strongly and the decorative
arts collection includes a rare porcelain vase from the Meissen factory.
The sculpture annexe, in the redeveloped Gallery complex, houses 19th
century marble figures which may be viewed from adjacent parklands.
The outstanding
permanent collection of Australian art includes the work
of artists from the I850s onwards; featuring the Colonial period,
the Heidelberg
School, Modernism and
a comprehensive collection of contemporary art.
The gallery
Shop stocks an extensive range of art related merchandise,
